Methodology

How the scoring works

Every provider is reviewed on exactly five criteria. Use-case pages then apply different weights so the ranking matches real user priorities instead of vague overall claims.

Each provider is scored 1 to 5 on five consistent criteria: FX, ATM costs, currencies, features, and price.
Use-case pages apply different weights so the ranking reflects real priorities instead of one-size-fits-all claims.
When public information is unclear or region-dependent, a small uncertainty penalty reduces the score to avoid overstating confidence.
Feature-heavy use cases such as online shopping add a modest boost for virtual cards, disposable cards, and security controls.
Scores are editorial comparisons, not financial advice. Always verify the official pricing and plan pages before signing up.

The five criteria

  1. 1. Exchange rate / FX fees: markup vs mid-market context, weekend markup if applicable, and plan or region caveats.
  2. 2. ATM withdrawal costs: free allowance, fees after the threshold, and reminders that operator fees may apply.
  3. 3. Supported/available currencies: holding and spending flexibility, with region-specific caveats where needed.
  4. 4. Extra features: virtual cards, budgeting, local details, spaces, disposable cards, and Apple/Google Pay support.
  5. 5. Price / subscription: free-plan availability plus paid tiers, without pretending one global fee schedule exists.
